The controversial Monument to the Belgian Pioneers in the Congo is covered by a vast curtain. This installation was initiated as part of the "Art Nouveau Brussels 2023" programme and is presented as part of the action plan "Towards the decolonisation of public space in the Brussels-Capital Region".
The work consists of a podium topped by an ‘Iso Gaze’ curtain mounted on an arch made from a three-dimensional steel structure and light elements that complement the project. The structure is reminiscent of the dais topped by a canopy that was erected when the monument was inaugurated in 1921.
A plaque placed in front of the work invites us to look ‘with other eyes’ at the scenes and quotations represented on the Congo Monument, highlighting the racial stereotypes conveyed therein.
