The Discovery Lunches are an opportunity to enjoy a sandwich during a free, accessible and popularised scientific lecture. All in the unique setting of the peristyle, our open-air (covered) conference area, with a breathtaking view over the Parc du Cinquantenaire.
There's no need to register for the Discovery lunches, which take place from 12:00 to 13:00.

Speaker: Rozemien De Troch, Belgian Climate Center.
Topic: The science of anthropogenic climate change explained
This conference is in English.
Context:
2023 was globally the warmest year on record and on average 1,48°C warmer than the 1850-1900 pre-industrial level. Furthermore, the summer of 2023 was a year of climate extremes such as heatwaves, wildfires and extreme rainfall which affected people and ecosystems worldwide.
This presentation will give the essential scientific facts on anthropogenic climate change. It will provide an overview of recent observed anthropogenic climate change and will explain how the warming of the Earth’s climate is caused by human activity. In addition, it will highlight how this human-caused climate change leads to an increase in the intensity and frequency of climate extremes and present the importance of climate models to quantify the expected evolution of Belgium’s climate for the next decades. The presentation will end with an important positive message on how we can combat climate change and avoid the worst impacts.
